Week 27 of 2025 brings key updates in the commercial transportation sector: The European Commission is planning to extend toll exemptions for zero-emission trucks until 2031, Mercedes-Benz Trucks introduces refurbished high-voltage replacement batteries for its eActros and eEconic models, Hankook launches the new iON HT tire for heavy electric SUVs and delivery vans, and the European cargo bike industry gets its own safety standard with EN 17860.

The European Commission has proposed extending the current toll exemption for zero-emission trucks and buses—initially set to expire in late 2025—until June 30, 2031. The move aims to offset the high upfront costs of electric trucks compared to diesel models and boost investment in clean fleet technologies. The proposal aligns with the EU’s climate target of a 43% CO₂ reduction in new heavy-duty vehicles by 2030. It still requires approval from the European Parliament and member states to become law.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks is launching the CB400 high-voltage replacement battery—a sustainable and cost-effective solution for first-generation eActros 300/400 and eEconic electric trucks. Used batteries will be dismantled, cleaned, tested, and re-certified at the brand’s emissions-free mobility center in Mannheim, Germany. The batteries will be updated to series production standards with current software and full warranty coverage. Compared to new battery production, the refurbished solution is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by about one-third, offering a significantly more affordable option for fleet operators.

Hankook is expanding its EV-dedicated iON lineup with the new iON HT, a "highway terrain" tire tailored to the needs of heavy electric SUVs and light-duty commercial vehicles. Designed to handle extra weight from batteries and cargo, the iON HT carries an XL load rating without compromising durability or ride comfort. Featuring advanced tech like Roll Lite Compound, Opti Cure, ProDurable Compound, and Opti Tread, the tire promises optimized rolling resistance and a lifespan of up to 128,000 km (approx. 80,000 miles). 3D grooves and reinforced shoulders ensure reliable performance in wet and demanding conditions. The tire debuted at the Electrify Expo in Los Angeles (June 21–22, 2025) and will be available starting in August in five sizes (18 to 22 inches), with T or H speed ratings.

The European cargo bike industry has introduced its first dedicated safety standard—EN 17860—establishing consistent classification and safety requirements for commercial cargo bikes used in delivery, trade, and municipal services. The standard covers total weight ranges from 250 kg to 600 kg and replaces the previous DIN 79010 standard, bringing clear regulations on design, safety, and transport performance for both single-track and multi-track cargo bikes, including those with motorized trailers. Notably, EN 17860 includes enhanced child safety guidelines for bikes designed to transport small children, mandating wider (at least 2.5 cm) three-point seat belts and stronger retention forces (2,100 N). It also sets new testing requirements for brakes, frame strength, and fork durability.
