IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 Kicks Off: What you can expect at Day 1, September 15

Grand Opening on the Main Stage 

The official kickoff takes place from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on the Main Stage in Hall 18, where IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 will be officially opened by Federal Minister of Transport Steffen Bilger, Lower Saxony Minister-President Olaf Lies, Hanover Mayor Belit Onay, and VDA President Hildegard Müller. 

Directly following the opening, the IAA Conference shifts focus to the sector’s core questions about the future. Opening the program in Hall 18 at 11:30 AM, Tesla's Head of Semi, Dan Priestley, will present the Tesla Semi. Next at 11:45 AM, Matthias Kässer from McKinsey & Company will address how the European truck industry can secure its competitiveness amidst zero-emission powertrains, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, and new international competitors. 

Starting at 12:30 PM, panel members from BCG, MAN Truck & Bus, DHL Group, and TRATON Charging Solutions will debate strategies for accelerating the transition to electric commercial vehicles in Europe. The session will zero in on charging infrastructure expansion, sustainable business models, and fleet operator requirements. 

How autonomous freight transport is already succeeding in practice will be demonstrated at 1:30 PM by Einride, Lidl, and Schwarz Logistics Solutions, using grocery retail delivery as a case study. Afterward, speakers including Dr. Markus Heyn from Bosch (2:00 PM) and Jens Holtinger from the Volvo Group (2:15 PM) will share insights into software-defined commercial vehicles, alternative drive systems, and the technological competitiveness of the European commercial vehicle sector. 

Additional perspectives will be delivered by FORVIA CEO Martin Fischer (2:30 PM) and Siemens eMobility CEO Markus Mildner (2:45 PM). At 3:00 PM, Christoph Herr from Ford, Parliamentary State Secretary Christian Hirte, and ZF CEO Mathias Miedreich will hold a discussion on innovation, competitiveness, and climate targets across the commercial vehicle market. Mahle CEO and Chairman of the Management Board Arnd Franz will offer further insights at 3:45 PM. 

In the afternoon, heavy-duty transport electrification and autonomous driving return to the spotlight. At 3:30 PM, Milence CEO Anja van Niersen will outline the requirements for expanding charging infrastructure across Europe. Renault Trucks CEO Antoine Duclaux will showcase at 4:00 PM how his company already incorporates electric trucks into its own production workflows. From 4:30 PM, Volvo Autonomous Solutions, MAN Truck & Bus, and Kodiak AI will explain why autonomous transport has long moved beyond a vision of the future. 

Software, AI, and Green Logistics on the Industry Stage 

The Industry Stage in Hall 13 also delivers a rich day-one schedule. Opening sessions cover an outlook on the European truck market for 2026 (10:00 AM) and novel sensor technology designed to improve safety around commercial vehicle perimeters (11:00 AM). At 12:00 PM, Deloitte will highlight how electrification and driver shortages are reshaping total cost of ownership (TCO) for fleets. 

Afternoon programming zeroes in on software-defined trucks, AI-driven vehicle diagnostics, and automated transport solutions. At 2:00 PM, representatives from Mercedes-Benz Trucks, Vodafone, digital.auto, and Deloitte will discuss new digital value chains for commercial fleets. At 3:00 PM, Bosch will showcase how AI-enabled predictive diagnostics can reduce vehicle downtime. 

During a panel on the future of autonomous road transport at 3:15 PM, experts from Volvo Autonomous Solutions, Plus, Bosch, and Kodiak AI will outline the path toward deploying Level 4 technologies in real-world operations. The stage concludes with a panel on green logistics featuring Porsche Consulting, Würth Industrie Service, DHL Group, and MAN Truck & Bus at 5:00 PM, examining how zero-emission freight transport can scale from isolated pilot projects into full industrial application. 

Innovations on the prototype.club Stage 

The prototype.club Stage in Hall 12 centers on emerging technologies and practical solutions from startups and young innovators. The agenda spans AI-supported safety and telematics systems to agent-based workflows and novel electric drive concepts. 

Presentations will highlight electric powertrains, hydrogen technologies, smart electrical connections, and axial flux motors for hybrid commercial vehicles. In the afternoon, Korean tech firms will showcase their latest innovations. Additionally, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and prototype.club will introduce a digital platform allowing testing infrastructure across Europe to be shared and booked. 

Hands-On Innovation 

Beyond the stage program, professional visitors can take numerous vehicles out for a test drive. Test Drives run from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, departing from Halls 11, 14/15, and 19/20. Participating manufacturers and companies include MAN, Volvo Trucks, Daimler Truck, DAF, Ford Trucks, KIA, Renault Trucks, Tesla, Scania, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. 

Two Networking Tours offer deeper dives into key technological areas. From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the "Battery Technology & Charging Infrastructure" tour visits stops including AUMOVIO, Electreon, E4YOU, Milence, Renault Trucks, and Shell Business Recharge Solutions. From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the "Software Defined Vehicles" tour presents solutions from AUMOVIO, HERE Technologies, Neusoft, Turntide Technologies, Valtech Mobility, and ZF. 

Historic commercial vehicles will be on display along the Showtruck Mile outside Hall 26. More than 20 classic models from brands like Büssing, Hanomag, Henschel, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo invite visitors on a journey through commercial vehicle history. 

International Exchange at IAA India Day 

From 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM, the Convention Center hosts the 16th IAA India Day, focusing on how the EU-India Free Trade Agreement impacts trade, investment, and industrial cooperation. Policy, business, and industry leaders will explore market developments, regulatory frameworks, and tech trends.
