Daimler Truck and Volvo have signed a binding agreement for a 50/50 joint venture to develop a software-defined vehicle platform. Headquartered in Gothenburg, the joint venture aims to create a unified truck operations platform, available to other manufacturers, becoming a leading developer of standardized hardware and software. This venture will offer a shared development platform where clients can build independent software applications. The companies plan to centralize the specification and sourcing of high-performance control units for commercial vehicles capable of handling large data volumes. The new company will also develop an operating system and programming tools enabling vehicle manufacturers to create unique digital functions. The goal is to separate software and hardware development cycles, allowing customers to purchase and update digital applications over the air, driving the digital transformation in the trucking industry, enhancing connectivity, and optimizing digital vehicle management.

At Mobility Connect in Milan, Geotab introduced new data-driven sustainability solutions, including the Geotab Sustainability Center for emissions tracking and the Electric Vehicle Suitability Assessment (EVSA), which helps fleet managers plan the transition to electrification. Geotab also offers a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report certified by TÜV Rheinland, the German technical inspection and certification organization, to accurately measure CO₂ emissions in line with EU compliance standards. These solutions are designed to help companies reduce their carbon footprint and achieve sustainability goals.

Volkswagen has launched the GenFarm project in Rwanda, a multifunctional facility providing electrified agricultural services. Using electric tractors powered by an innovative battery-swap system, the project aims to make clean energy accessible to rural areas. An Empowerment Hub (e-Hub) will be established in partnership with local organizations like GIZ and the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture, offering training for farmers. The project targets eco-friendly, sustainable agriculture and is expected to be fully operational in the first half of 2025.

Daimler Truck have commenced series production of the so-called Front Box for the eActros 600 at their plant in Mannheim, Germany. This technology module includes multiple control units, high-voltage components, and an electric air compressor to support the operation of the long-haul e-truck. Manufactured on a newly established production line in a 5,500-square-meter area, the Front Box is designed to meet high flexibility requirements for various product versions. The series model will be assembled in Wörth, Germany and is set to make its official debut at the end of November 2024.
