







World's First Electric Mining Dump Truck with Sodium-Ion Battery Delivered in China

According to battery manufacturer Hina Battery, a fully electric mining truck powered by sodium-ion batteries has been delivered for the first time in China. Jointly developed with Shaanxi Tonly Heavy Industries, the vehicle is intended to demonstrate that sodium-ion battery technology is well-suited for heavy-duty commercial vehicles and demanding machinery.
According to battery manufacturer Hina Battery, a fully electric mining truck powered by sodium-ion batteries has been delivered for the first time in China. Jointly developed with Shaanxi Tonly Heavy Industries, the vehicle is intended to demonstrate that sodium-ion battery technology is well-suited for heavy-duty commercial vehicles and demanding machinery.
676 kWh Sodium-Ion Battery for Mining Applications
The electric dump truck was handed over in July to Sanyou Mining, a subsidiary of the Sanyou Group. It is built on Tonly's 120E platform. For its power supply, the vehicle uses the Haixing series battery system developed by Hina Battery, featuring a total capacity of 676 kWh.
Hina Battery originally introduced the battery system in March 2025. According to the manufacturer, the cells achieve an energy density of more than 165 Wh/kg. A full charge can be completed in 20 to 25 minutes. At the same time, the company cites a service life of more than 8,000 charge cycles, even with regular fast charging.
Sodium-Ion Technology Built for Heavy Loads
Mining operations place unique demands on electric powertrains and battery systems. In addition to high mileage, vehicles must withstand heavy dust, severe temperature fluctuations, and long operating hours.
Hina Battery sees clear advantages for sodium-ion technology in this sector. Beyond high cycle life, the company highlights a wide operating temperature range and high charging rates. This makes it possible to use smaller battery packs in combination with short charging times and high vehicle utilization.
At the same time, the electric drive is expected to help reduce the mining industry's heavy reliance on diesel engines.
Sodium-Ion Batteries Also Tested in Heavy-Duty Trucks
For Hina Battery, the mining truck represents its second major commercial vehicle project this year. In June, FAW Jiefang completed extensive road testing of an electric semi-truck co-developed with Hina Battery.
The Jiefang J6P was equipped with a 339 kWh sodium-ion battery and covered more than 15,000 kilometers over a period of nearly seven months. According to FAW Jiefang, the battery retained more than 90 percent of its usable capacity even at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius (-40°F). Here, too, the company cites a service life of more than 8,000 cycles under fast-charging conditions.
