In the twelfth episode of season two of the IAA TRANSPORTATION PODCAST, we welcome Matthias Kässer, Partner & Leader Commercial Vehicles at McKinsey & Company.
Together, we talk about a commercial vehicle industry that is changing at breakneck speed—and why the coming years will be decisive for how competitively positioned the European truck industry will be in the future.
Matthias Kässer shares exciting insights into the McKinsey study "Europe's Truck Transition – Key for Decarbonisation & Competitiveness" and explains why the shift to zero-emission trucks is about far more than just climate protection. New powertrain technologies are reshaping vehicle architectures and business models while creating a new competitive landscape. Speed is increasingly becoming the decisive factor: whoever can industrialize and economically scale new technologies faster gains a major edge in international competition.

The conversation focuses on three central prerequisites for the ramp-up of zero-emission trucks: vehicles, economic viability, and infrastructure. While a competitive generation of battery-electric trucks is now available for distribution and long-haul transport, the economic framework and the expansion of charging infrastructure remain major challenges. Matthias Kässer explains why Europe doesn't just need more suitable charging points, but above all high-capacity grid connections, available space, faster permitting processes, and long-term investment security.
We also discuss when battery-electric trucks already make financial sense today and why a theoretically positive Total Cost of Ownership alone does not guarantee a market ramp-up. Residual values, financing, long-term transport contracts, competitive charging costs, and reliable regulatory frameworks must work together for fleet operators to actually invest. Especially in cross-border European freight transport, harmonized conditions are needed rather than a regulatory patchwork.
Furthermore, we discuss how artificial intelligence can drive greater competitiveness—from faster processes and after-sales service to boosts in revenue and efficiency.
