MAN Starts Series Production of MCS-Capable Electric Trucks

MAN Truck & Bus has launched series production of its first electric trucks equipped with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS). By kicking off production at its Munich plant, MAN says it is becoming the first European commercial vehicle manufacturer to bring MCS-capable eTrucks into series production, supporting the rollout of the new high-speed charging standard for battery-electric trucks.

The first vehicles in the MAN eTGX and MAN eTGS series will be delivered in phases to customers in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and the Czech Republic. The goal, alongside the expansion of charging infrastructure, is to further expand the operational capabilities of battery-electric long-haul trucks.

Up to 750 kW of Charging Power

With the Megawatt Charging System, the vehicles are engineered to achieve charging outputs of up to 750 kW at up to 1,000 amps and 750 volts. An MAN eTGX or eTGS equipped with six batteries and a total capacity of 534 kWh can charge via MCS from 20 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. For vehicles with seven batteries and 623 kWh, the same charging process takes under 40 minutes.

Thanks to these shorter charging times, the vehicles can be recharged during legally mandated driver breaks. According to MAN, single-charge ranges of up to 570 kilometers (approximately 354 miles), combined with opportunity charging, enable daily ranges of more than 1,000 kilometers (approximately 621 miles) within the same working shift as a diesel truck.

Preparing for the MCS Rollout

According to MAN, the MCS ecosystem is currently developing in parallel across vehicles, charging infrastructure, and IT systems. The manufacturer is partnering with various infrastructure providers to guarantee interoperability for the new standard. In addition to the front-left MCS port, the eTGX and eTGS models offer optional CCS charging ports at various positions on the vehicle, providing greater flexibility when using both public and private charging stations.

In addition, MAN is already integrating available and planned MCS locations into its 360° eMobility advisory services. Through the MAN Charge&Go charging service, customers also gain access to MCS and CCS charging points across Europe that have been specifically audited for electric truck operations.
