PNO Sustainable Journey
Why PNO?
Because Every Journey Matters. A family-owned business founded in Denmark in 1975. We have grown to become the Nordics' largest fleet rental business.
PNO's story is about resilience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to People, Planet, and Profit. As a family-owned company, we infuse every decision with integrity, foresight, and a profound respect for the environment. Our ambition is clear: to lead the transition to sustainable freight, not just for our generation but for those to come.
Our Values:
- Responsible: We're a family-owned business founded in 1975. We're building PNO for the generations to come.
- Personal: We always listen to our customers and put them first. It's about building innovative and value-adding solutions.
- Pragmatic: We get things done by focusing on solutions rather than problems. Progress over perfection.
- Trust: We walk the talk and do what we say we’ll do. It’s about empowering and supporting each other.
- People first: We focus on being present and building a healthy organization with our remarkable team.
- Curious: We encourage everyone to venture beyond. It's about creating change and being open-minded.
- Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: A diverse and inclusive workforce is fundamental to us. It’s about doing the right thing.
What is PNO's stance on sustainability?
More Than a Commitment, It's A Journey. PNO isn't just talking about sustainability; we're living it. It’s about people, planet, and profit. Leading the transition to sustainable freight (our purpose) requires a holistic approach. How do we do that?
1. We take (climate) action
2. We put people first – they are at the core of leading the transition
3. We’re honest and transparent about where we’re at
4. We want to give back more than we take
Why did we decide to become a B Corp?
A PROUD B CORP SINCE 2019
As a B Corp, we’re part of a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental impact. B Corp allows us to evaluate how our initiatives impact people and the planet. It’s our North Star Metric.
In 2019, we were part of a small group of Danish businesses that became a B Corp. We made that decision because we are a responsible company. We scored 80.6 points. That was also the reason we decided to go for the recertification process, increasing our score from 80.6 points in 2019 to 101.1 points in 2023.
We are proud to have become a better B Corp in 2023 and are committed to continuing in our sustainability journey and learning with experts, peers, community, and partners. We are happy to see how the movement has grown a lot, with more than 100 B Corps in the Nordics now. We’ve come far on this road and not stoping here.
How did we become a recertified B Corp in 2023?
Initiatives that made us a Better B Corp in 2023:
- Introducing health initiatives such as office yoga and meditation
- Introducing diversity training
- Having community days
- Gender Pay Gap analysis & target setting
- Calculating our Scope 1-3 carbon emissions
- Launching the PNO Impact Ambassador Program
- Donating to environmental & social organizations
- Investing in carbon removal projects
Our people initiatives:
- PNO Capability Academy: This Academy is all about professional and personal development. We offer courses such as presentation skills, English language, a coaching program, and more.
- Women in Leadership Program: We’ve introduced a leadership program designed specifically for the women at PNO.
- Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Building a diverse team and an inclusive workplace for all. We joined the UN’s Target Gender Equality Accelerator Program, all PNO employees need to attend diversity training, and we have a working group for our DEI efforts.
- Health Initiatives: We want to offer our people the time and space to take care of themselves. Every quarter, we introduce a new health initiative. These include office yoga, access to Headspace, educational content on the impact of our food choices, and more.
- Community Days: Giving back to our local communities is very important to us. Everybody at PNO spends two full working days a year volunteering with local social and environmental organizations.
- Protecting nature: Our health initiatives contribute directly to protecting Danish nature. We buy land for the km we bike, run, walk, and minutes we meditate. Plus, for every new employee, we buy 1m2 of land to protect and restore the wild Danish nature.
Other things we do:
- Inclusive recruiting process
- A partnership with Den Danske Naturfond, we have protected 5833m2 of wild Danish nature in 2023
- Started our CSRD journey in 2023
Why are we participating in the IAA TRANSPORTATION/Myclimate partnership?
As the world converges at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2024, focused on the central theme of charging infrastructure and achieving the Paris climate targets, PNO is inviting visitors to join us in leading the change towards a sustainable future.
PNO isn't just talking about sustainability; we're living it every day. For that reason, it was extremely important for us to minimize our footprint as much as possible during our participation at IAA. Hence, Myclimate was the perfect partner to support our efforts.
From our roots in Denmark to becoming the Nordics' leading fleet rental business, our dedication to the environment has been unwavering. As a proud B Corp since 2019 and with a goal of reaching Net Zero by 2030, we're not just planning for the future; we're actively shaping it.
Challenges we faced and solutions we discovered?
Leading the transition to sustainable freight is continuous work and a journey. So, as such is part of the process to face challenges as well as to make some mistakes. It's through these experiences that we keep on learning and moving forward. Below are some of the initiatives that didn’t go as we had envisioned in 2023.
- Offsetting: After deliberating on the pros and cons, we have decided to stop focusing and instead invest in the environment. We are planning to invest directly in social and environmental organizations with boots on the ground.
- Business travel CO2 target: Our target was based on a travel forecast we made for a year ahead. However we realized that the target was not attainable to get an accurate forecast. We decided to change our approach, so we now prioritize educating and incentivizing our team to choose the lowest-impact mode of transport, such as trains and electric vehicles.
- Human Rights: In 2023, we focused more on the environment, governance, and employees. We have a limited understanding of the impact our initiatives might have on human rights. 2024 will be the year we will focus more actively on working with human rights and preventing negative human rights impacts. That’s why we joined the UN’s Business and Human Rights Accelerator Program.
- Pay Gap Analysis: We were not able to deliver it in 2023, but this is still a work in progress that we intend to devote time to accomplish.
